Tuesday lectures

Lectures on three topics, then lunch

  1. Professor Piotr Gutowski's lecture on personalism was one of my favorites. He began with a brief outline of personalism in general and the various ways the person has been defined. Then he discussed Karol Wojtyla's writings and thought on personalism and how they were shaped by his experiences in Poland. After Monday's lectures as a background, I felt that we could begin to grasp why Wojtyla's bottom to top approach to building his ideas was so crucial. He analyzed human experience and reflected upon his own personal experiences.

  2. This day of lectures was probably my favorite. As Maddy mentioned, Professor Gutowski's lecture was excellent, but as a student of theology (and planning to become a professor), I also very much enjoyed learning about Christianity and theology in Poland. One of the best parts of this trip for me, was the opportunity to immerse myself in another country's intellectual culture, even if only for a few days. It reminded me that although ND's theology department is great, the world is a much bigger place than ND. There is a vast variety of questions and challenges that can be explored in an international dialogue. Additionally, I think I gained a lot from learning about topics that I am familiar with, but learning about them in a different social, political, theological(, etc.) context.
