Why we are going

I

This trip is only possible because of the gracious work of the Open University at KUL, and our contact Anna Tarnowska-Waszak. (Thank you!) This program arranges for study visits for students from all over the world. They have arranged for us lectures, room and board, and visits to sites in the neighboring area.

We also thank the Nanovic Institute of Notre Dame for their generous grant, making this possible.

We were interested in connecting the writings of St. John Paul II on the human person, with the expression of a holy person in iconography. Polish Catholicism uses icons in a way no other Latin Christian church does, because of that county's interaction with the Eastern Orthodox Church over the centuries. Especially interesting is our Lady of Czestochowa, but there is a weeping icon in the Cathedral of Lublin, too.

Here is an online article which describes the interaction very nicely.

Must go finish packing now!
